Downhill World Champion Franjo Von Allmen led a sweep of the podium in the Downhill event at Crans Montana, with Marco Odermatt and Alexis Monney finishing in second and third place, respectively.
The 23-year-old emerging talent achieved his first Downhill win in the Alpine Ski World Cup today. He stands out as a name to watch among the favorites in Downhill. He has consistently placed within the Top 10 in his last eight World Cup races. This season, he has achieved three previous podium finishes in World Cup Downhill events, taking second place in Val Gardena, Bormio, and Wengen.
Swiss skiers cop the first three places in the Downhill standings: Marco Odermatt (445 points), Franjo Von Allmen (372), and Alexis Monney (260).
"It feels amazing, especially the first win in Downhill, in front of the home crowd and with two other Swiss guys on the podium. I had two or three little mistakes where I left my position, where the ski went not the way I wanted it to. In the end, I was quite surprised that it was enough for first place," Von Allmen said.
For Marco Odermatt today's second place marked his 4th Downhill podium of the season. He has won two Downhill World Cup races this season in Val Gardena and Wengen) and finished second in the opening race in Beaver Creek behind teammate Justin Murisier.
"Everyone wants to win and if you're leading a race you don't want to get second, that's for sure, but I did my very best. I had a perfect run, I gave it all. It was the maximum I could ski on this slope, on this hill. I had good intentions and also good skiing so I was very happy with my performance," Odermatt said.
For Alexis Monney, Saturday's third-place finish was his third Downhill Alpine Ski World Cup podium of the season after winning in Bormio and coming second behind James Crawford in Kitzbuehel. Before his victory in Bormio, Monney had never finished higher than 8th in his previous 23 career World Cup Downhill races.
"This is amazing – three Swiss on top today. It's crazy to be a part of this. I knew it was a good run but then I knew that Franjo is really fast and Odi can always race fast. I wasn't sure how good it was but now I'm happy," Monney said.
Swiss skiers won 5 out of 6 Downhill races in the Alpine Ski World Cup this season. Canadian James Crawford made the exception winning the Downhill in Kitzbuehel. Swiss skiers have now taken 12 of the 18 podium places from the six races of the 2024-2025 winter season.
