In a remarkable performance, Lara Gut-Behrami triumphs by over one second in the final Super-G of the season in Sun Valley. Lindsey Vonn finished in second place 1.29 seconds behind Gut-Behrami. Federica Brignone rounded out the podium in third place 1.33 seconds behind the Swiss.
Sun Valley was Gut-Behrami’s second World Cup win of the season. Since the 2012-2013 winter season, the 33-year-old Swiss skier has secured at least one race win in every season except for 2018-2019. She has claimed 47 World Cup race victories and is in fifth place on the all-time women's list. The only four women with more World Cup wins than her are some of the biggest legends in Alpine skiing: Mikaela Shiffrin (99), Lindsey Vonn (82), Annemarie Moser-Pröll (62) and Vreni Schneider (55). She has won in Garmisch and comes second in four races of this Super-G World Cup season.
With today's win, Lara Gut-Behrami secured the Super-G Crystal Globe, for the third time in a row. She has won the Super-G Globe five times before: 2013-2014, 2105-2016, 2020-2021, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024.
Gut-Behrami is the only Super-G star with six Crystal Globes. German Katja Seizinger (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998) and American Lindsey Vonn (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015) won five times the discipline title.
On the Men side, Austrian Hermann Maier (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004) and Norwegian Aksel Svindal (2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2014) are also in the exclusive club of the winners of five Super-G Crystal Globes.
The skier from Ticino is second for most World Cup Super-G wins (24) and podium finishes (44) among women, only trailing Lindsey Vonn (28 wins and 47 podiums).
Gut-Behrami has 99 World Cup podiums to her name. If she manages to finish on the podium in the Giant Slalom event next Tuesday she will become the fifth woman to reach 100 World Cup podiums after Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, Annemarie Proell, Renate Goetschl, and Vreni Schneider.
"It's simply beautiful and incredible to win the sixth globe. I'm proud of it. It takes a lot to compete so well for so long. I knew I had to ski my best today to win. I never felt like I was risking anything. It felt safe. I was able to accelerate from top to bottom; the slope was beautiful and suited me. Since I'm here I finally found the happiness again of skiing, so it was just fun to ski and everything is easy when you're enjoying what you're doing," Gut-Behrami said.
Lindsey Vonn achieved today her first podium in 2656 days, and over seven years, since she finished third in a Super-G in Are in March 15, 2018.
"I finally put all the pieces together. This season there have been glimpses of good skiing, but I always made a mistake here or there. But today it was enough to get on the podium. It's emotional because as much as I love this journey, it has not been an easy one. Today makes it all worth it," Vonn said.
Federica Brignone claimed her seventh consecutive World Cup Super-G podium in her best season ever.
"I started good, I felt good, but from the middle part on I blocked myself completely and I wasn't able to do what I wanted. I was too stressed maybe today," Brignone said.
"Lara has shown that she is the best Super-G skier of all time. I think it was almost impossible to beat her today," she added.
