The first Super-G of the Alpine Ski World Cup in 2025 featured a first-time winner. The 22-year-old US skier Lauren Macuga proved she is a skier to watch by winning the Super-G in St. Anton. After finishing in fourth place in the first Downhill of the season in Beaver Creek and seventh in the Super-G in St. Moritz, she celebrated her first victory and podium finish in her 17th Super-G and 30th World Cup race.
Stephanie Venier finished in second place 0.68 seconds behind Macuga. Yesterday's Downhill winner Federica Brignone completed the podium in third place.
"I knew I had to push. When I started and the sun came out, I knew what I had to do. I hit every gate until the finish. I couldn't believe it when I looked at the timekeeping, and I still can't believe it now," Macuga said.
Stephanie Venier, who made her World Cup debut exactly twelve years ago in the Downhill in St. Anton, secured her first podium finish of the Alpine Ski World Cup winter. It's her 12th podium in the World Cup, the 6th one in the Super-G.
"It was a good run until the icefall, then I was a bit passive. But apparently, I let my skis run. My body language showed that I wanted to get down quickly," Venier said.
Federica Brignone reached her 73rd podium in the Alpine Ski World Cup today. The Italian celebrated 21 of her 73 podiums in super-G.
“But in the end, it was not easy, the visibility was awful. You could see nothing under your feet. It was really difficult to attack and do your lines. I tried my best but I knew that if the sun was coming out it would be a different race. But it is like this, this is sport. I am happy because even if I made a mistake I didn’t block myself, I tried. An amazing weekend, I love St. Anton," Brignone said.
After today's race Brignone (479) has replaced Croatian Zrinka Ljutic (456) as leader of the overall standings.
Lyndsey Vonn finished today in 4th place 1.24 seconds behind her teammate to join the US party.
"I think it was a really good step forward. You know in St. Moritz. I was kind of getting into the rhythm and yesterday kind of gave me a lot of confidence. I think I was a little bit more active today but the conditions were not easy. I think I made some pretty big mistakes, so to be fourth is something I am proud of," Vonn said.
"My equipment is getting better every day, my confidence is there. Now I just have to get that last 10-15% that I know I can get to," she added.
Lara Gut-Behrami finished fifth today and now leads the Super-G World Cup with 205 points after three races, ahead of Sofia Goggia (160), Cornelia Hütter, and Lauren Macuga (both 158).
