Following the comebacks of Marcel Hirscher and Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, Lindsey Vonn also announced her return to the Alpine Ski World Cup today. "I'm happy to be back on the slopes. I love what I do, and I love to ski fast. I'm just going to enjoy it. (...) My goal is to enjoy it, and hopefully, that path will lead me back to World Cup racing. I wouldn't return to the US ski team if I didn't have ambitions," Vonn said in an interview with the New York Times after weeks of rumors about her comeback.
"Getting back to skiing without pain has been an incredible journey," stated the 40-year-old American Skiing Champion.
It is currently uncertain when Vonn will compete in a World Cup race again. The first women's speed races of the season are scheduled for December 14th and 15th in Beaver Creek, where Vonn is likely to participate as a forerunner. In St. Moritz, on December 21st and 22nd, Olympic Champions and former world champions will have the opportunity to apply for a wildcard.
Lyndsey Vonn competed in her last race in February 2019 in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Lyndsey Vonn has won 82 Alpine Ski World Cup races, eight medals at the Alpine World Ski Championships (including a double gold in Downhill and Super-G in Val d'Isère 2009), and three medals from the Olympic Winter Games. Vonn is the only American woman to win Downhill gold at the Olympics.
She won 20 World Cup titles (including four overall Crystal Globes in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012), and achieved 137 World Cup podiums.
