Marco Odermatt Wins First Alpine Ski World Cup Super-G of the Season in Beaver Creek

Updated: Dec 8

After placing second in the Downhill yesterday, Marco Odermatt won the first Super-G of the season today at the Birds of Prey racecourse in Beaver Creek. In a challenging race, out of the first ten athletes, six did not finish the race-, Odermatt secured his win with a consistent performance and a super-fast finish. He beat Cyprien Sarrazin by 0.18 seconds. With starting number 24, 23-year-old Lukas Feurstein secured third place, finishing +0.47 seconds behind the leader. This marks the first Alpine Ski World Cup podium for the Austrian. It's the first podium place for the Austrian Men this season. Austria has only missed the podium four times in 26 Super G's at Beaver Creek.

Defending Super-G World Cup Champion Marco Odermatt has won 38 races. He is the third man to win at least 13 World Cup Super-G World Cup races, after Hermann Maier (24), Aksel Lund Svindal (17), and Kjetil Jansrud (13).

It is his third win in the Super-G at Beaver Creek. He also won in the Birds of Prey in 2019—his first victory in the World Cup—and in 2021. He has equaled the record set by Hannes Reichelt, who won in 2005, 2007, and 2014.

"It was a brutally difficult race, it was already a little bit bumpy from the top, and then you had to really ski smart from the middle section. It was quite fast but still big turns, and also all the rolls have been quite big this year. It was difficult to ski and not easy to stay on the line. You just have to let the skis run, even if you feel like shit. I love the Super-G here. During the run, I thought it would be difficult to win, but now I'm glad it worked out," Odermatt said.

Sarrazin said it was towards the end where he lost out to Odermatt.

"I had a good line and then I let the pressure get to me because I didn't see the gate because of the shadows. Because of that, I was too straight and then I lost two-tenths of a second I think there. That's my only regret, the rest was pretty good."

"It's great. We trained really well, the whole team is strong, the course is challenging, I feel good here. I knew I had to attack, and I managed that well. It feels good," Feurstein said.
